Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

I didn't necessarily pick this as a Coonawarra wine at initial sight. It's subtle, yet rich with ripe black fruit, in the blackcurrant/cassis mould.

I suppose what I mean by that regional ignorance is a lack of distinct eucalypt, which I guess is often what leads the way for that regional/variety construct.

That fruit profile flows through the palate, the grainy tannin profile and freshening acidity perhaps more of a regional marker. Needs a little time to gel, to pull together. It'll get there.92

Bremerton Battonage Chardonnay 2017

The Battonage of the wine's name has achieved its aim of adding width and texture across the fore-palate. Broad profile, not sacrificing acid mind, delivering on a good length.

It's a mix of green apple and stonefruit, the fruit not wanting. Falling short a little, it sacrifices further width to deliver decent length. 91

d'Arenberg The Hunjee Heartstring Montepulciano 2018

I've not seen something this purple since Barney the Dinosaur. It's positively brimming with purple.

That vibrancy doesn't quite carry through as perhaps one might suspect. Instead, rather, it offers more of a herbal and meaty presence.

The biggest surprise is the tannin structure, assertive and drying. It perhaps dominates proceedings, swamping any fruit that may be lurking underneath. 90

Harewood Estate Reserve Shiraz 2014

Less enamoured with the Harewood reds when compared with their exemplary Whites.

Reserve designation seemingly means in this instance "lots of oak thrown at this", but it seems to hold back the fruit character that may be present.

Moderate tannins meets boozy warmth; clove spice, pepper and hints of licorice see things out. 90

Zonte's Footstep Bolle Felici Prosecco

Pithy citrus aromatics, conveys freshness.

It's certainly fresh and lively, with a curl of citrus acidity, coarse and broad in presentation. Pithiness and zest, softer back palate.

Reasonable length, in that citrus derived manner. Refreshment factor high. 88

Alkoomi Victrix Chardonnay 2017

Named after the eucalypt Victrix. It's hand picked, whole bunch pressed to French oak (unsure of the age.)

Finely seasoned, citrus and stonefruit. The French oak adding that aforementioned seasoning. It's fine on entry, yet immediately delivers a lavishly textural experience, succulent and plump across the palate.

It's actually fine boned, well pitched, structural. Elegant, a wine of finesses and presence. 93

Golden Grove The Little White Box GSM 2016

A tribute to the patriarch of the Costanzo clan, and the man that winemaker (son) Ray Costanzo credits with being a pioneer of alternative varieties: Sam Costanzo. Respect.

Tilled earth, black cherry, subtle hints of roasted meats. Oak serves to frame this up, almost nutty in profile. Light and supple palate, a contrast to what one might expect from the aromatics. Fruit first, with twists of spice, a Cherry ripe element, perhaps some hickory smoke adding - and aiding - depth and length.

Sometime you come across a wine that is in the mould of the winemaker, or perhaps here in the mould of its muse, deep and yet flexible - a complex wine, and yet at ease. 93

Ballandean Estate Viognier 2017

Viognier seems to be a variety enjoying a resurgence on the Granite Belt, a combination - I think - of good conditions and winemakers getting a handle on the nuances of the variety. It's a variety I explored in a longer form piece (link) and was pleased on a recent visit to the Granite Belt to see it showing well.

Vanilla kissed stonefruit, subtle ginger and musky hints. It's that fruit that has primacy, with the seasoning in the background

Spice tinged palate, perhaps a suggestion of a barrel component adding further substance. If at all, it would be minor, sufficient enough to add weight and shape.

Decent flow and energy, perhaps languidly so, and length. Give this a stab with something like a ginger poached chicken. 90

Raven's Croft Pinotage Rosé 2018

Raven's Croft wine is the eponymous label of South African Mark Ravenscroft (coincidentally at the time of writing the winery is up for sale if you're interested). Situated some 12KM west of the central township of Stanthorpe, in the Greenfields sub-district. Estate plantings (including this Pinotage fruit) are located at some 950m above sea level.

Ravenscroft's first Rosé under his own label, it came about as a result of the estate Pinotage fruit suffering some hail damage early in the season and some portions not being considered sufficient for making as a single varietal Pinotage. Only a South African!

Pretty aromatics from the get go, as if to lure and entice. Savoury nuances, a light and airy structure around the palate, delicately weighted. Subtle spice betwixt berry flavours.

Decent length. 91

Ballycroft Small Berry Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Normally the wine of Joe's I approach with the most trepidation: Langhorne Creek Cabernet clocking in at 15%, not for the faint hearted.

The oak is present, perhaps dominant, that with some chocolate and biscuits oak remnants. Herbal inflections, bay.

The depth and intensity of flavour are present, yet it doesn't come across as full throttle as one has encountered prior. It's a blue/black fruit mix, velvet smooth across the palate; full bodied, but Joe has the measure of this. 89

Slight custardy, almond oak showing here. Stonefruit, Citrus and figgy hints. Altogether rather pleasant, inviting. Toast and flinty notes, touch of chalky phenolics, gentle drying rub across the length of the palate.

Not one whose ever been totally sold on Barossa Chardonnay, yet I suppose when you've the resources of Pernod-Ricard you can fashion something crowd pleasing. Find this under a deal and you'd no doubt be happy. 88

Ubertas Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Second of two samples from Ubertas, here a "Great Australian Red". Will appeal to classicists, with a ready throw of vanilla and toffed oak sitting proud.

Black licorice notes add a certain depth, succulence of black fruit softens that impact on the palate. Pepper. The oak tannin at this stage feels rather blocky, needing some time to settle.

Yet, still, it does provide a frame for the fruit to sit and to deliver on a good length. Will serve it well into the future - if you've the patience to keep your hands off of it! 92+

Robert Stein Reserve Chardonnay 2017

Fruit from vines planted in 1976, they're handpicked and the fruit whole bunch pressed, 50% new French oak was used with a small portion of malo.

Reserve designation Chardonnay at quite a reasonable price.

It's brimming with stonefruit, to the point that you can almost sense the juice dripping from the fruit. Hints of citrus augment this, a suggestion of oak framing it up, adding spiced nuances.

Stoney, nigh flinty on initial entry, morphing to a waxy and sensuous note, the texture slippery and glossy. Delicate balance, that interplay of fruit, texture and substance from oak. 92

George The Wizard Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Offers tantalising glimpses, yet doesn't quite deliver with conviction.

Tannin structure delivers in spades, but perhaps that may be the wine's issue in that the palate seems awash with fine grained tannin, at the expensive of flavour.

Aromatically it, again to emphasis, offers a glimpse of that choc-mint-cedar profile that a regional/varietal combo should offer.

Fruit glimpses in that blackcurrant/cassis mould, but it never seems to shift out of second gear. Nothing to truly criticise for, just expecting more to propel it into good to great territory. 88

A Jacob's Creek sub-brand, albeit one pumping out $50 Hills Chardonnay.

Opens with classic aromatics, that mix of stonefruit, citrus, all wrapped up with just toasted oak and associated spice.

Pronounced citrusy tang on entry, certainly bright and fresh initially, before the spine of acidity and structure make their presence felt.

Good wine, but value wise it is pitched squarely against S+S M3, Tapanappa's Piccadilly, which all have the march on this. Good as I say, not $50 good. 91

Robert Stein Half Dry RS15 Riesling 2018

This one slipped to the back of the pile, and to be honest when I found it I was waiting for an appropriate food moment to attempt to pair with. Do love a half/off-dry Rizza with a bit of chilli.

Really pronounced lemon aroma, lemon sherbet meets preserved lemons. Fresh, fragrant, and a floral touch creating an allure.

More of the same on the palate, yields to a zest and minerally aspect. Touch of weight from the retained sugar, pitched well against the natural acidity. Balance, as ever, is key - the sugar/acid mix working in unison to deliver. 93

Liv Zak Chardonnay 2017

Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, settled overnight and then racked with solids to barrel, juice was left alone in barrel to ferment naturally, and was aged in old barrels on full-lees for 8 months with occasional stirring.

Liv Zak being the second label of Warramunda Estate of course. Toastiness, citrus, lemon curd perhaps lending a creamy aspect to proceedings.

Quite hard and lean palate, veers to a slatey and minerally edge, but comes at the expense of further complexity and flavour.

Comes across rather flat on the finish. 87

Robert Stein Farm Series SRG 2018

Unusual white blend from a very aromatic trio. Unsurprisingly it leads with a citrus component, there's an element of muskiness in the frame, too.

Clocking in at a mere 10% alcohol, it's more akin to something like a frizzante wine, a light spritz combined with some retained sugars gives both a minerally liveliness and textural weight and width from the sweetness.

Brian Croser is undoubtedly the Godfather of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, first planting the region to the variety some 40-odd years ago.

Broad and powerful wine, instantly you feel seduced by its quite intoxicating allure of stonefruit, citrus and oak. The palate suggests sandalwood meets a subtle cinnamon tinged spice. Has substance, yet also a gentle flowing length across the length of the palate.

As ever balance is key, and that elegant wine combined with acidity will see this hold well. At ten dollars cheaper than Shaw + Smith's M3 it's a very attractive premium regional offering. 93

Fair whack of lumber thrown at this number. Guess that's partly what makes it a 'Reserve' right? Struggling to see through it to get to the fruit.

It's there mind, lurking underneath, whether it will be allowed to shine through only time will tell. Rich, powerful wine, dark fruit and chocolate, heavy shake of the pepper mill. It's boozy too.

Clare Valley reds, so often in the shadow of the more renowned Whites - particularly Riesling.

Yet when they're on song, they truly are magnificent. Focussing blackcurrant/cassis draws you in, add to that some Mulberry and Plum character. It's fairly substantive, yet with what feels like and juicy and succulent undertow.

Golden Grove Durif 2018

A hale and hearty red, the grape variety being named after Dr Durif who “created” it through crossing Syrah with the rather less known Peloursin. One of its positives is that it is resistant to downy mildew, a boon in the Granite Belt which can suffer with summer storms.

Here winemaker Ray Costanzo has fashioned a ballsy red - it spends 14 months in American oak hogsheads, 25% new - shot with a mix of red and blue fruit on the nose. The palate gutsy with softening fruit aspects and - somewhat surprisingly - a freshening acidic presence, no mean feat when the wine’s clocking in at 15% alcohol.

I actually enjoyed this just simply paired with some rather dark chocolate, but it has enough about it to marry up to a nice wintry stew, something like an osso bucco, with its fine tannins able to lap up protein. 91

Deep and rich, smelling very much like its constituent components from its source. Petite Sirah also being known as Durif, and possessing an almost creosote like depth.

For that depth, it's initially light on its feet, red fruit and licorice bullets initially, before the onset of the fennel/anise depth - surely the Petit Sirah and oak support taking over.

Tapanappa Definitus Foggy Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Something akin to a block level wine off the Fleurieu's Foggy Hill Vineyard. The Definitus strip being a sub-Ridge formed where ferruginuous sandstone comes close to the surface. The strip also marks a delineation between two rows of two Bernard Clones (115 and 117, planted in 2003).

Highly perfumed, violets, sour cherry, slight spirited/lifted note. Starts segueing to black fruit hints, as though they're being summoned from the wine's depths.

Light, fine tannin, makes its presence known initially. Carries with it a dark presentation, earthy and coffee grounds like in profile.

Latterly it asserts itself, dark and pronounced, it's tight and closed at this juncture - cellar for a minimum of five years, drink over a further five to fifteen. 93
