Old Ballycroft Joe’s second stab at the Durif, a variety not necessarily known for its subtlety, and in the hands of Joe Evans that is taken to the limits. From the off it smells like it is going to be a larger than life wine, of tarry oak and what you might consider coffee and liquorice essence..
It’s a wine of depth, and yet as ever with Joe’s wines, the extraction doesn’t feel overly forced, still managing to carry a semblance of balance and finesse all things being considered. Robust, sitting heavy in the mouth, a suggestion of tannin - but again it’s not overwrought.
I’ve always said that Joe makes his wines in the manner that he wishes, and he does so well. 89
