Mezzacorona Mezza NV

Party fizz made up of 60% Chardonnay – 30% Pinot Bianco – 10% Muller Thurgau.

Hints of pear, dribble of stonefruit - not the strongest in aromatics.

Tickle of minerally acid across the palate, slightly unctuous and textural, whilst not lacking acid it's balanced with a semblance of sweetness (that texture). Moderate length, decent aperitif style. 88

Aylesbury Estate Pater Series Chardonnay 2018

Aylesbury Estate is located in Ferguson Valley GI, in the South-West corner of Western Australia.

This Chardonnay oozes quality, hints of toasty oak married to figgy hints over suggestions of riper stonefruit.

A burst of freshness meets a grapefruity zest and minerality, then awash with texture and more of an expansive mix of fruit with oak remnants. The quality is undeniable, but at this early juncture it feels like it's still coming together.

It will ease into itself, the whole proving greater than the sum of the parts. 92+

Nashi pear, rock melon vibes, fresh and dribbling with juice of summery fruits.

Pirate Cru Imp's Old Vine Shiraz 2014

Still throwing a fair whack of lumber on this one, it's big and brassy, still evident at five years of age. Fruit sits underneath, Barossan to its core, all mulberry and damson like, purple in its magnificence.

There's a suppleness for all its heft. A succulent black fruited kiss of fruit sweetness, fine grain of tannin, but really the depth is what marks this wine out.

It's certainly of its style and place, a marker it more than happily carries with conviction. 93

Campo Vieja Rioja Gran Riserva 2012

Needs time, air - slightly closed, reductive. The palate possesses what I love about Gran Riserva - so Gran Riserva wines require minimum 3 years aging, with at least one year in oak and six months in bottle - Tempranillo, the remnants of old oak bound up with silken tannins that latterly reveal themselves in that fine grained, silty way.

Fading hints of black fruit on show here, morphing to a palate of reasonable length of savoury flavour. Pretty incredible to be able to appreciate a 7yo on release for $30. 91

Ridgemill Estate Malbec Mourvèdre 2019

Somewhat unusual blend, I can't recall too many examples where these two are bedfellows. On this showing - as a young, fresh and crunchy style - there should be more of it. Roughly 60/40 split of the two, I joked to winemaker Peter McGlashan that on aroma alone it was worthy of a second date!

Has that inviting feel, something like bramble and plum with a meaty undertow. Seems to shift and alternate between a savoury bent, and with a more primary offering.

The palate is succulent and juicy, yes unusual bed fellows these may make, but a long and fulfilling relationship - perhaps - on this showing. You can but be charmed by itsjuicy come hither ways, yet with that savoury angle serving as a juxtaposition. A big yes from me. 92

Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier 2018

Yalumba's Y Series represents cracking value across the board. This Shiraz Viognier is no exception. An inviting hit of Mulberry, blackcurrant, even some cherry in the mix; what seems a mere kiss of oak - there is none - accentuates and frames the wine up. Peppery hints tickle the nasal cavity.

Medium bodied on entry to the palate, black fruit that glides across effortlessly, fine rub of tannin; spice and acidity aid flow and length.

Snow pea tendril, citrus, a chalk and salinity on a breeze vibe. Something of more tropical bent; dripping ripe peach, pulpy mango or some such.

Tart and citrusy, the cut and thrust of acidity, probing and jabbing. About a length hangs the fruit, giving the impression of adding volume, as if to suggest either a barrel component or certainly some work. Observation of technique, nothing more.

Savoury, briary, stemmy, of hedgerow - unsure as to exact percentage - of whole bunch for sure. Throws a fair offering of both black fruit, and with a fine and minerally structure.

Harewood Estate Denmark Riesling 2019

Wasn't too fussed with the 2018 version of this, pleased to say that in 2019 it's certainly hitting the  spot. It's all lemons, hint of bath salt adding its hand to the aromatic profile.

Lemon sherbet with a thrust of minerally acidity, it's of the style that at once both puckers and enlivens, dancing its way energetically across the palate.

That said it's fairly languid across the finish, as if sauntering to its end at its own pace. 93

Moppity Vineyards Escalier Shiraz 2015

Escalier (meaning staircase) and representing the Browns' continuous quest for improvement.

It's a single block wine, this vintage being block 7, the vintage prior was block 8. Intended to only be made in the very best years, it would seem that fortune is looking kindly on Moppity, this being the third consecutive release.

Offering subtle aromatics, of dusky violets and smatterings of black fruit. Partial whole bunch inclusion with a cold soak, prior to fermentation - the small inclusion of co-fermented Viognier.

It's silken, slight, subtle and lithe; there's a beguiling subtlety to the wine, yet it also manifests itself in a depth and intensity of flavour.

Cloven spice and black pepper, yet augmented with black fruit. It's a wine of depth, subtlety and balance. Worthy of the many accolades it has a massed. 94

Pirate Cru William Hunt Old Vine Mataro 2015

WIlliam Hunt, in the words of Chief Pirateer Dirk Pettigrew: "Bearded Christian pugilist, a realist and traditionalist with an enquiring eye for natural beauty found in the detail." Old vines, planted back in the Victorian era, and hence a nod to the artisans of the day. A time of a search for reform and improvement, of fighting against the church.

To the wine in question, the stawart Mataro, from a small block of dry grown, old vine Mataro in the Barossa's Vine Vale sub-region.

At four years it's redolent of what might be considered the markers of old Vine Mataro: of blue fruit and subtle licorice hints.

Medium bodied, fine grained tannin, yet it grows in stature across the palate. Blueberry and Mulberry, primarily, form the predominant flavour across the palate. Initial fruit hints borne of the Blueberry and Mulberry deliver a subtle pop of flavour that delivers - generously. 92

A blend of Merlot, Cabs Franc and Sauv; blend unknown. Made only in the best years (and the first such release I'm aware of in some 8-9 years of knowing the brand/label).

Certainly more oak dominant on the nose, deep and heavy, suppressing the fruit initially. Beyond that, it's an attractive offer of roast capsicum, green leaf, veering to violet and something like choc-mint.

Palate reflects a similar bent, deep and heavy set; a suggestion acidity for added freshness, but really built for the long haul. Impressive structure and framing, nice to see a wine (not billed as such) in a reserve moniker and the quality matching the same. This will live long. 95

Tim Adams Skilly Ridge Riesling 2018

From the associated release notes: Produced using only free-run juice, fruit flavours are kept pure and the resultant wine mirrors the berries tasted in the vineyard at harvest.

It's fragrant, floral - lavender and violets; stonefruit and dripping honeydew melon. Textural width and weight married to a fine minerally length. Treads a path that is light, yet one also of verve and a touch of minerally swagger.

Delicate length, citrus and zest with more of that textural feel. Light, balanced and assertive. A delight, a wine that will serve in the cellar well for 10-15 years. 93

The Moppity 'Crafted' are crafted from specific blocks or rows of fruit that exhibit certain characteristics. This 2017 from the vineyards block 2, and identified for "an ideal juice to tannin ratio which we knew would result in a wine with great structure and generous varietal flavour".

A subtle example of Cabernet Sauvignon on initial presentation, a soapiness. Being light, lithe, possessing a suppleness - stonefruit strangely - then veering towards cassis. Fine, nigh powdery, tannin - barely there - ethereal - quite unusual for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Heartland Sposa e Sposa 2016

A mix of Lagrein and Dolcetto and an early attempt at future proofing (2003 first vintage), winemaker Ben Glaetzer: "it looked ideal for SA (specifically the Creek) because it has very good natural acidity, thick skins and dense, hardy canopy meaning that it remains fresh with good acid balance and the canopy prevents sunburn and the cooked/stewed flavours that can result.".

Schloss Volrads Volrats Riesling Trocken 2016

Lychee and pulpy tropical fruit. It's an odd feeling for a palate used to - primarily - Eden and Clare Valley Riesling, to not see the lime and apple florals so redolent in those examples.

Still debates about terroir would be far shorter if everything were homogenised. Minerally palate, a delicate tingle, long and bringing with it a sense of fruit sweetness, yet it's assuredly dry (Trocken).

I'd wager it's stronger game is one the palate, the aromatics a little subdued for me. Green apple, hints of peach and pithy citrus. Very interesting, and piquing interest further in German Riesling. 91
