Stockman's Ridge Rider Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Chocolate, cedary oak, Bay seasoning.

Creamy red fruit palate, soft and sensual - it's delicate frame of 13.1% sets the wine up. Easy going and representing good value.

Nicely structured, finishes on a medium to firm grain of tannin, moderate acids to clean things up. 91

Tapanappa Foggy Hill Pinot Noir 2023

Beautiful expression of Pinot Noir and of Foggy Hill, of course.

Plum, dark cherry, a lingering undertow of spice, a dab seasoned oak adding its signature.

The palate is exquisitely framed: darker fruit presence, it feels polished, a suggestion of newer oak here. Lovely firming tannins, on an excellent length. Lovely depth of flavour, black tea building through the finish. Quite reserved at this juncture, excellent promise ahead. A yes here. 94

Terre à Terre Crayères Vineyard Cabernet Shiraz 2022

It's a release that needs some time, from the get-go it's somewhat shy and reserved.

Slowly it begins to unfurl, offering red and black fruit. Mineral and earthen glimpses, graphite. Something that manifests, broods even, like gunoil - deep in its core.

A slow burner, from a cool vintage. And one that marks 20 years since the establishment of the Terre à Terre brand under Xavier and Lucy Bizot. 93

Good bracing acidity that propels a generous length. Quality wine. 93

Jean Loron Pinot Noir 2023

Vin de France Pinot Noir here - broadly meaning it either falls outside a designated region (appellation) or fails to confirm to AOC rules for a variety in a region.

Blackcurrant and bramble, it smells cool and is suggestive of an amount of whole bunch in the mix.

Savoury, hint of home-brand Cola, slight sappy note. Fine rub of tannin. Yes it pulls a bit short, but all up forms an attractive package. 89

d'Arenberg The Mind Palace Sangiovese 2022

Such an enjoyable Sangiovese: black cherry, slight ferrous earthiness.

Palate, juicy with a dark vein threading across the palate. Pop of acid to cleans things up, carrying you home.

Italians look away now, but with some lamb ragu pallardelle this came up a notch. A yes here. 91

Mayfield Vineyard Jonty Met Otto Cabernet Franc 2023

Lovely, joyous vibrancy to the wine - bright, perky, puppy black fruit that pops in the glass!

Similarly conveys itself on the palate: core of bright and glossy black fruit, acids in balance and bring flow. Lovely, fine chains of silken tannin to thread it all together. A joyous release, and one that provides potential further claim for Cab Franc to potentially be Orange's 'thing'. 93

Citrus, passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf - subtle underlying fresh herb rounding out the profile.

Lovely mid-weight to the palate, yields to a minerally bent that shifts things up a gear. Zesty, lively - with a mouthfilling expanse to it. Definite phenolic presence to the wine, really making itself known - creating lasting presence. 94

Huntington Estate Grand Reserve Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Charry oak with roast meat introduction here, it sets its stall early as a wine of substance and heft. It sees 25% new American oak, that certainly adds to the character, especially with 17 months time in it.

Yet, a lighter introduction on the palate: blackcurrant/ cassis notes, fresh lick of acidity that brightens the mid-palate. Developing further, plum, clove, black olive and cedar notes add to the layers of complexity. 95 2026-2044

Henty Farm Malakoff Vineyard Shiraz 2023

A new wine for Henty Farm - with access to fruit from the famed Malakoff Vineyard in Victoria's Pyrenees region.

Cool clime vibes: roast and fermenting meats, pan juices. Dried grasses, baked earth. A lovely savoury expression of Shiraz.

Lovely minerality to the wine, glimpses of the 'volcanicity' - a vibrancy and vitality I see in volcanic soils. Black fruit and twists of dark spice add extra dimensions through the final third, allowing the wine to build in stature and deliver a finish of substance. 94

Hill-Smith Family Estate label sold through Coles brand liquor stores and some listings.

Bramd update has reflected a greater emphasis on connections to the growers that supply the fruit, connection tot hose that - pardon the creative license - work the earth.

Plum, mulberry, Char and charred meat.

Slickness across the palate, a glide and ease through the middle. Slight drying quality, on a good length. Quaffable. Mid-week barbecue, minute steaks and a tray of Cumberland snags. 89

Melon, a harder edge of Stonefruit kernel, fig and spice.

Initial entry is gentle and textural, leading to an expansive mid-palate through the finish. Burst of energetic tangy-lime acidity closes the wine out.

It's cool year credentials and moderate 12.5% acidity self-evident in an excellent package. 93

Rich, chocolatey; whiffs of smoke over plum sauce.

Slick and glossy entry: plum fruit, bright prime and central to the theme of the wine. Falls off a bit through the final third, not quite matching the bright promise of the early primacy of fruit.

That said, still a fair throw of length here. 91

Pink grapefruit, atop a touch of savoury oak nuttiness from a small percentage fermented in barrel, for additional width and body.

Lively and fresh, a good swagger of citrus carousing across the palate. Green capsicum and a jalapeno pickle note here too. Well worked and made, the cooler and longer vintage has benefited here. 92

Mayfield Vineyard Mrs Crawford Pinot Noir 2023

A new wine for the Estate range, this Mayfield Vineyard Mrs Crawford Pinot Noir is a nod to Margaret Crawford who owned the property for 65. Hand-picked fruit, 30% whole bunch, French oak for nine months (20% new).

Generousity on offer here, a succulent red and black fruit mix. Even with minimal air time it starts to open up, offering alternative vistas into the wine's charms.

Cassis, passionfruit, glimpses of citrus oil. It's succulent, fleshy, juicy. Some woodsy and earthy mushroom hints too, set against a fine grain of tannin - the two aspects working in tandem to offer a package where the sum is greater than the individual parts. 93

Classic Grenache/ Shiraz blend from McLaren Vale's d'Arenberg.

It's seen some moderate price rises over the years but still great value at $22 - especially for a wine that's shown impressive cellar-worthy pedigree beyond its price-point.

Leads with the Grenache earthiness over subtle baked raspberry. A modicum of chocolate in the frame too.

Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier 2022

The last Friday in April is designated as "International Viognier Day". Unsure who gets to make a call to designate such, regardless Yalumba - without whom the variety might not exist, certainly in an Australian context at least - were kind enough to sling a bottle of their flagship "Virgilius" to mark the occasion.

Some barrel time - ten months, French oak - adds its presence here, over white florals and spice (mace, ginger) and a little vanilla.

There's weight to the palate, varietal and stylistically. Spice, depth - it's dry and on an excellent length and persistence of flavour. Drink to ten years. 94

Lyon's Will Chardonnay 2023

Chardonnay from the Macedon Ranges, a region I feel I know but - admittedly - would be hard placed to definitively place on a map. Chardonnay like this could well challenge that geographic uncertainty.

Melon, drizzle of lime, grapefruit tang. Aromas that - logically - flow to the palate, fresh and vibrant.

Set before a firmer position, an edge that feels as solid as the name for the region from which it came conveys. Unsure if a geographical feature qualifies as onomatopeia, mind.

Hill-Smith Family Estates Chardonnay Tasting

I recently had the pleasure of joining an online tasting of Chardonnays from across the Hill-Smith Family Estates portfolio, joining winemakers Heather Fraser (Ringbolt & Yalumba), Marc van Halderen (Heggies Vineyard) and Clive Jones (Nautilus Estate) along with other invited wine media.

Each wine was selected on the basis of representing the Terroir from which the fruit is drawn. Each at a similar price point, around the $30 or so mark. One observation I made - and refer here - is how little oak was mentioned with respect to being a significant to winemaking, instead the fruit being allowed to shine - reflective of that desire to exhibit wines of terroir.

--

Yalumba Samuel's Collection Eden Valley Chardonnay 2022 2022 $28 13%
I noted during the tasting that the wine sees 50% stainless and 50% oak, the former to demonstrate leanness for a wine made in a deliberate and laid back style. Fruit is from an established vineyard, some twenty years average age.

Pale straw, fig and spice. Supplemented with stonefruit and subtle vanilla notes. An easy going and approachable Chardonnay from a mild and even vintage. 90

--

Heggies Vineyard Estate Chardonnay 2023 $36 13%
From a vineyard planted to Chardonnay and Riesling (2/3rd 1/3). The Chardonnay is predominantly Mendoza clone (for those inclined) along with a good mix of other clones. Winemaker Marc van Halderen offered that as a brand they're seeking to bring a revival back to Heggie's Chardonnay.

Residual oak showing, not heavy handed. More overt and textural, broader in profile - certainly in comparison to the leaner Yalumba Samuel's Collection. There's a generosity of appeal; partial lees stirring occurs every 4-6 weeks to build an element of texture.

Citrus, vanilla bean and a doughy edge here. Gentle cleansing, grapefruit acidity through the finish. 91

--

Nautilus Marlborough Chardonnay 2022 $36NZ 13%
Clive Jones has been the winemaker at Nautilus for 26 years. Fruit is from a vineyard purchased in 1993 (the fruit having first been contracted in 1989).

This is the only Chardonnay made by Nautilus, some 80 barrels in total. Fruit is picked by clone, across 3-4 different picks. It's entirely barrel fermented, a little lees stirring once dry.

Grilled nectarine with an underlying nougat element. Spiced, with a vibrancy to the wine, an energetic expression. Creamy expression through the mid-palate, custard apple like, before a spine of refreshing acidity. 93

--

Ringbolt Wilyabrup Chardonnay 2023 $36 13.5%
After the long-held asociation with Cabernet Sauvignon, winemaker Heather Fraser was keen to explore Margaret River Chardonnay. a long
standing grower had some Chardonnay fruit. It's drawn off two blocks: 50% Burgundian 96 - seeing 100% Malo in barrel - and 50% GinGin (AKA Mendoza) - seeing no Malo. The finished wine is composition of everything produced.

Ripe stonefruit, nougat and toast. Delicate citrus cascading, initial palate flow. Peach, nougat. It sees
- 10% new oak; balance is 1-5yo French Barriques. Slight briny, minerally edge on the lead-in to the palate; bitter lemon and grapefruit zest. Lovely drying length. 92

--
With thanks to Hill-Smith Family Estates (Lauren Hampel, Heather Fraser,
Marc van Halderen, and Clive Jones).

Harewood Estate Great Southern Riesling 2023

This is the one that generally leads me down the nasal path to Thai Basil, spiced blossoms, citrus oils.

It's not as obvious on the palate as the Single Vineyard offerings, you have to go looking. It's perhaps a more straightforward affair: lemon balsam, a little passionfruit and guava like note. Not overt. On a reasonable finish, a good-ish length. 91
